Once upon a time, there was a king and queen who were very sad because they had no children. They traveled to all the waterways in the world, made vows, went on pilgrimages, and tried every means, but nothing bore fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, finally, the queen gave birth to a daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A grand christening ceremony was held, and following the custom of the fairies at the time, they prepared all the fairies they could find in the kingdom (they found seven) to be her godmothers, and each of them gave her a gift. In this way, the princess was endowed with all imaginable perfections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the baptismal ceremony, all the participants returned to the king’s palace, where a grand feast was prepared for the fairies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before the fairies, there was a luxurious case containing spoons, knives, and forks made of pure gold, decorated with diamonds and rubies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, just as they were all seated at the table, a very old fairy entered the hall. She had not been invited. That’s because the fairy had been believed to be locked in a tower for over 50 years, either dead or under a spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The king offered her a seat, but he couldn’t provide her with a golden case like the other fairies. That’s because there were only seven cases made for the seven fairies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The old fairy seemed to feel slighted, and she muttered some threatening words. The youngest fairy sitting next to her overheard the complaints and immediately left the table, hiding behind the curtains when she sensed that the old fairy might give the princess an unfortunate gift, wanting to somehow amend the old fairy’s mischief by being the last one to give a gift to the princess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, all the fairies started giving their gifts to the princess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The youngest fairy bestowed upon her the gift of becoming the most beautiful being in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next fairy granted her angelic wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The third fairy gave her the gift of exquisite grace in everything she did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fourth fairy gifted her with the ability to dance perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fifth fairy endowed her with the voice of a nightingale, singing beautifully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the sixth fairy presented her with the gift of playing all kinds of music with utmost perfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then came the turn of the old fairy. Her bitterness was overshadowed by the trembling of her aged body. She gave the gift that the princess would prick her hand with a spindle and die because of the wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everyone trembled at this terrible gift, and tears welled up in their eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Right at that moment, the young fairy reappeared from behind the curtains and said in a loud voice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“King and Queen, fear not. I promise you that the princess shall not die from this misfortune. I cannot fully undo the senior fairy’s gift. The princess will indeed prick her hand with a spindle, and that wound will cause her to fall into a deep sleep for 100 years. At the end of those 100 years, a prince will come to awaken her.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Upon hearing this dreadful prediction given by the old fairy, the king quickly issued a proclamation, decreeing that everyone should be punished with death if found using a spindle or spinning wheel, and all spindles in the kingdom were to be destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
About fifteen or sixteen years later, the king and queen were away from the palace for leisure. On that day, the princess was running around the palace, playing. Along the way, she entered a small room at the top of a tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There, she found a kind old lady spinning with a spindle. Unaware of the king’s decree, the good old woman continued her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What are you doing there, Granny?” asked the princess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’m spinning, my dear,” replied the old lady, not knowing who the princess was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Oh, that looks lovely. How do you do it? Can you show me?” said the princess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As soon as she took the spindle, she either became flustered, a bit clumsy, or perhaps it was fated by the fairies, but the spindle pricked her hand, and she fainted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The kind lady didn’t know how to handle this situation and called for help. People came running, and they sprinkled water on the princess’s face, loosened her clothes, slapped her palms, rubbed her temples with Hungarian water, but nothing could wake her up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Remembering the fairies’ prophecy, the king concluded that she would need to sleep for 100 years until a prince came to wake her. So, he had her carried to the most splendid room in the palace, where a bed embroidered with gold and silver was prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The princess looked like an angel even in her unconscious state, her skin unaffected by the faint. Her cheeks were rosy, and her lips were coral. Although her eyes were closed, they could hear her quiet breathing, assuring everyone that she was not dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The king ordered that she be left undisturbed and allowed to sleep until she awakened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The young fairy who had cast the spell to let her sleep for 100 years was in a kingdom far away when this misfortune happened. However, she was quickly informed by the little dwarves who could walk seven leagues with one step. The seven-league boots were shoes that allowed one to travel seven leagues with each step. The fairy departed immediately, arriving at the castle an hour later in a carriage drawn by a fire-breathing dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The king welcomed her and approved of everything she did. The fairy possessed great foresight. She foresaw that when the princess woke up, she might find herself alone in the ancient palace, not knowing what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So, the fairy did the following. She touched her wand to everything in the palace except the king and queen, putting them all to sleep. Female officials, maids, chambermaids, ladies-in-waiting, gentlemen, officers, stewards, cooks, servants, guards, and all those beneath them, as well as the horses in the stables, the dogs in the large garden, and even the cute little spaniel named Mops who lay on the bed beside the princess\u2014all of them fell into slumber. The fairy ensured that they would sleep until their master awoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even those who were in the middle of spitting fire, chasing hares or partridges, and those who were about to swallow a mouthful, all fell asleep. The fairy didn’t take long to do her work. Fairies are quick to perform their tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, the king and queen, after kissing their beloved child without waking her up, went outside the palace and declared that no one should dare to approach the palace. To protect her from the curiosity of people, all the trees and bushes around the park suddenly grew and entwined, making it impossible for both humans and animals to pass through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a result, only the top of the palace tower was visible, and that too from quite a distance away. No one doubted that it was the work of the fairies, who demonstrated their extraordinary powers to ensure that the princess would have nothing to fear from the curious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After 100 years had passed, the son of the kingdom’s king (who was from a different country and not the sleeping princess) went out hunting in the region. He inquired about the tower that could be seen in the midst of unfamiliar trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everyone responded according to what they had heard. Some said, “It’s the ruins of an old castle, haunted by ghosts.” Others claimed, “Sorcerers and witches from all over the country hold Sabbath and nocturnal gatherings there.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The most common belief was that an ogre resided in the tower, and he would capture all the small children he caught and eat them at a designated time. No one could pursue him, as he alone possessed the power to pass through the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The prince was uncertain about what to believe and hesitated. Then, a very good farmer approached him and spoke:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’m not sure if it interests you, but I’ve heard it from my father, who heard it from my grandfather. There used to be the most beautiful princess in the world in that castle. She has been sleeping there for 100 years, and only a prince chosen by destiny can awaken her.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Upon hearing these words, the prince became determined. He decided to take the challenge without much thought, driven by love and honor. With this resolve, he acted immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As he proceeded beyond the trees, the giant trees, bushes, and vines naturally made way for him. He walked toward the castle he saw at the end of the avenue and entered it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was a little surprised that no one could follow him, as the moment he passed through, the trees closed up again. Nevertheless, he didn’t stop. The young and passionate prince was always brave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He entered the spacious outer courtyard, and everything he saw was so terrifying that even the bravest would be frozen in fear. An eerie silence dominated the place, and everywhere he looked, he saw images of death, lying humans, and animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, he realized that the guards with ruby-colored faces and pimpled noses were simply sleeping. Their goblets still had drops of wine, clearly indicating they had fallen asleep while drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He then crossed the marble-paved courtyard, climbed the stairs, and entered the guards’ room. The soldiers were lined up, snoring with muskets on their shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next, he passed through several rooms filled with gentlemen and ladies all fast asleep. Finally, he entered a room decorated entirely in gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There, he saw a sight he had never seen before. A princess, about 15 or 16 years old, slept, and her radiant beauty was almost divine. He trembled with awe and knelt before her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And when the magic was broken, the princess woke up. She looked at him and said, even more kindly than he had imagined, “Are you my prince? I have waited for you for so long.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The prince was enchanted by these words and deeply moved by the way they were spoken. He was unsure how to express his joy and gratitude, so he pledged that he loved her more than himself. Their conversation was not very coherent, but they shed tears more than they talked \u2013 it was almost more eloquent, filled with so much affection. He was more confused than her, which was not surprising. She had time to think about what she would say. It is highly probable that during her long sleep, good fairies made her have very pleasant dreams (history may not say anything about it). In short, they talked for four hours, but they still hadn’t shared half of what they had to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, everything in the palace had awakened. Everyone began to focus on their duties, and those who were not in love started to feel very hungry and nearly starved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even the most important lady-in-waiting was quite famished, so she couldn’t bear it any longer. She loudly informed the princess that dinner was being served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The prince helped the princess to rise, and although she was dressed completely, she didn’t mention that she had a lace collar peeking out over her high collar, just like her great-grandmother (meaning she had a fashion sense from 100 years ago). Nevertheless, she was charming and beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They entered the grand hall of the palace, known as the Hall of Mirrors, and had dinner there. The princess’s attendants served, and violins and oboes played ancient tunes but sounded wonderful, even after more than 100 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After dinner, they wasted no time and had a grand wedding ceremony performed in the palace chapel by the chief justice, while the chief lady-in-waiting drew the curtains. They hardly slept, and the princess didn’t need to. The next morning, the prince left her and returned to the city. His father, the king, should have been worried about him, as he had been gone for days. The prince said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I got lost in the woods while hunting and stayed at a charcoal-burner’s hut. He gave me cheese and bread.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His father, the king, was a good man and believed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, his mother didn’t believe it to be true. He went hunting almost every day and always had some excuse, but after seeing him spend three or four consecutive nights away, she began to suspect he was married.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And rightly so, for he had been living with the princess for more than two years and had two children with her. The first was a daughter named “Morning,” and the second was a boy named “Day.” He was much more handsome and charming than his sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The queen spoke to her son several times, asking what he was doing with his time. Keeping the truth a secret was a matter of great concern to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the prince couldn’t trust her with the secret. He loved her, but he also feared her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because she came from a family of cannibals, and the king would never have married her under normal circumstances. He only married her for her immense wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rumors in the palace suggested that she had cannibalistic tendencies, and it was very challenging to dissuade her from attacking the children whenever she saw them. That’s why the prince made sure not to say a word about his children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, after the king’s death (which occurred about two years later), he openly declared the marriage. He took his queen to the palace in a grand procession, riding between their two children in a carriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shortly after that, the king went to war with the neighboring emperor, Contalabut, and left for the expedition, entrusting the kingdom’s rule to the queen mother. He strongly advised his wife and children to obey her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He continued the campaign throughout the summer, and as soon as he left, the queen mother sent the princess to a villa in the forest, where her terrifying desires could be more easily fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A few days later, she herself went to the villa. She instructed the head chef, saying in English:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Serve dinner there.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’m thinking of having Morning for tomorrow’s dinner,” said the wicked queen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Oh, Your Majesty!” the kitchen servant exclaimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Yes, that’s what I’ll do,” the queen replied (and she said it in a cannibalistic tone, expressing a strong desire for fresh meat). “And I’ll have it with Robert sauce.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The poor kitchen servant, knowing he couldn’t argue with the cannibals, took a large knife and headed to Morning’s room. She was four years old at the time and came skipping and laughing towards him, asking for candy figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He burst into tears, dropped the large knife, went to the backyard, killed a small lamb, and prepared it with a very delicious sauce. Then, he carried Morning to his wife and hid her in the backmost lodging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
About eight days later, the wicked queen said to the kitchen servant, “Now let’s have Day for dinner.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Without saying a word, he resolved to deceive her again as before. He found Day and saw him, then three years old, fencing with a small stick against a big monkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The kitchen servant carried Day to his wife and hid him in the same room as his sister. Then, he prepared a very tender young goat in place of Day, and the queen mother ate it with great relish, as if she were devouring the young queen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everything had gone well until that moment, but one night, the wicked queen said to the kitchen servant, “Now I’ll eat the queen with the same sauce as her children.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This time, the poor kitchen servant despaired, as he couldn’t deceive her anymore. The young queen was now 20 years old (excluding the period of her 100-year-long sleep), and it was difficult for him to find a very sturdy animal in the garden that he could deceive the queen mother with. He was tormented, and in order to save his own life, he decided to take the queen mother’s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He went to the queen’s room and entered with a dagger, fully prepared to strike immediately, filled with as much anger as possible towards her. However, he did not startle her. Instead, he spoke to her with great respect and conveyed the orders he had received from the queen mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Do it, do it,” she said (stretching her neck to say so). “Carry out the order, and then I will go to see my children, my beloved and adorable children.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She thought her children were dead since they were taken away without her knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“No, no, Your Majesty,” the kitchen servant wept. “You won’t die, and you will see your children again. Please go to my lodging. They are hiding there. I will give you a young doe instead and deceive the queen mother once more.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The kitchen servant immediately led her to his room, where he hugged her and her children and made them cry together. Then, he cooked the young doe. The queen mother had it for dinner and enjoyed it as if she were eating the young queen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was delighted with her cruel act and came up with a story to tell the king when he returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mad wolves had devoured the queen and her two children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One night, while she was sniffing around the palace courtyard and gardens as usual to detect the scent of fresh meat, she heard Day crying from the underground room. At the same time, she heard Morning gently hushing him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cannibal queen immediately recognized the voices of the queen and her children and was furious that she had been deceived. The next morning (in a very terrifying voice that made everyone tremble), she ordered them to bring a large tub to the center of the grand hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The tub was then filled with toads, venomous snakes, snakes, and all sorts of reptiles. And she ordered the queen, her children, the kitchen servant, his wife, and the maid to be thrown in there, all with their hands tied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the executioners were about to throw them into the tub, the king arrived on horseback in the garden (he had returned unexpectedly early). “What is this dreadful sight? What has happened?” he asked in the most surprised manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No one could inform him, but the cannibal queen, driven to madness by the revelation of her evil deeds, leaped into the tub herself. In an instant, she was devoured by the ugly creatures she had commanded to be thrown in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The king was deeply saddened by the events caused by his mother, but he was quickly comforted by his beautiful wife and lovely children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
