Once upon a time, there was a poor miller who had a very beautiful daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One day, he had an audience with the King and to appear important, he told him that his daughter could spin straw into gold. “Now that’s a talent worth having,” said the King to the miller. “If your daughter is as clever as you say, bring her to my palace tomorrow, and I’ll put her to the test.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the girl was brought to the palace, the King led her into a room full of straw, gave her a spinning-wheel and a spindle, and said, “Now start spinning all night until early dawn. If you haven’t spun the straw into gold by then, you shall die.” Then he closed the door behind him, leaving her alone inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The poor miller’s daughter sat down and didn’t know what to do. She had no idea how to spin straw into gold and became so miserable that she began to cry. Suddenly, the door opened, and a tiny little man stepped in and asked, “Why are you crying so bitterly, Miss Miller-maid?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Oh!” answered the girl, “I have to spin straw into gold, and I haven’t a clue how to do it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What will you give me if I spin it for you?” asked the manikin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“My necklace,” replied the girl. The little man took the necklace, sat down at the wheel, and spun the straw into gold. By morning, all the straw had been spun away, and the bobbins were full of gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next day, the King was pleased with the gold but desired more. He had the miller’s daughter taken to a bigger room full of straw and gave her the same ultimatum. Again, the little man appeared, and after promising him her ring, he spun the straw into gold once more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the third day, the King brought her to an even bigger room filled with straw and made her the same offer, saying that if she succeeded this time, she would become his wife. The miller’s daughter didn’t know what to do and began to cry. Once again, the little man appeared and asked for her first child in return for spinning the straw into gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A year passed, and a beautiful son was born to the miller’s daughter, and she forgot all about the little man. But one day, he returned and reminded her of their agreement. The Queen offered him all the riches in her kingdom, but he insisted on having the child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, the little man said, “No, life is more precious than all the treasures in the world.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Feeling sorrowful, the Queen accepted that she had to give her child to the little man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taking pity on her, the little man said, “If you can guess my name, I will stop taking the child. You have three days to guess.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Queen spent the whole night thinking of all the names she had ever heard and sent messengers to search for names throughout the kingdom, trying to find out the little man’s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the next day, when the little man appeared, she listed all the names she knew, such as Casper, Melchior, Belshazzar, but each time the little man replied, “That’s not my name.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The following day, the Queen sent messengers to inquire about names from the people in the neighborhood and compiled a list of very unusual names to tell the little man when he appeared. She tried names like “Sheepshanks Cruickshanks” and “Spindleshanks,” but the little man always responded, “That’s not my name.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the third day, the messenger returned and said, “I couldn’t find any new names, but on a high hill beyond the woods, where the foxes and hares bid each other good night, I found a little house. In front of the house, there was a fire, and around the fire was a strange little man hopping on one leg, singing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Today I bake, tomorrow I brew, And then the child away I’ll take; For little does my royal dame know That Rumpelstiltzkin is my name.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The moment the Queen heard that name, she was filled with joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And when the little man appeared, he asked, “Now, my lady Queen, what is my name?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Queen asked first, “Is your name Conrad?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Is your name Harry?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Is your name perhaps Rumpelstiltzkin?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
